EDITORIAL NZ Welcome to the Winter issue of Image NZ This issue focuses on celebrating the NZSDA Conference and the NZSDA Sign and Display Awards winners’ achievements over the last 12 months under very trying circumstances. The NZSDA conference, everyone agreed, was by far the best yet. It was not just the stunning Queenstown scenery, the fantastic food, wine and social events; it was that there were so many lessons for any business owner, regardless of how long you’ve been in business. A core theme of the conference was sustainability, and there were extensive discussions about what it is, what it means, what actions suppliers are taking, and what actions you can take. We also gained fascinating insights by visiting local Queenstown businesses in other industries to learn from their experiences. The keynote speakers on day two were quite simply inspirational but in very different ways. Justine Ross, founder of 42 Below Vodka, which was the first NZ- made Vodka, describes herself as a serial disruptor which is particularly the case in her latest highly controversial venture, a Carbon Positive Plus farm called Lake Hawea Station. WWW.IMAGEMAGAZINE.CO.NZ WINTER 2022 3 Two things resonated with me as she shared her experiences, both past and present. The first is her relentless attention to creating and communicating her brand and its values consistently at every touch point of the business. The second was her clever use of viral marketing and public relations activities which were relatively low cost, to gain maximum press resulting in a story on page 6 of the New York Times, which proved to be a turning point for her business. The second speaker Mark Inglis was inspirational in a different way. A double amputee above the knee due to being trapped in a snow cave for thirteen days at the top of Mt Cook, the fact that he has gone on to be Nz’s first paralympic cycling medallist and the first double amputee to climb Mt Everest is simply incomprehensible. It is difficult to describe how amazing this event and these speakers were, but if you missed it, do yourself a favour and make it a priority to join us there next year. Best Regards Janet Maitland
